Hand Rejuvenation

CONVENIENTLY LOCATED TO SERVE NASHVILLE, BRENTWOOD, AND FRANKLIN

Hand rejuvenation has become a hot topic in plastic surgery. The aging hand typically has a loss of volume with thinning, sun damaged skin. The biggest statement repeated by patients is that “my hands don’t match my face or other parts of my body that I have been able to maintain”.

Hand Rejuvenation

Double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Warner Papillion routinely performs hand rejuvenation. Rejuvenation is quite simple. You need to replace the volume and address the damaged skin. Volume replacement is possible with your own fat or use of a filler. Skin correction can also be done with laser resurfacing and or creams.

Fillers

Many injectable dermal filler products are commonly used for hand rejuvenation. Dermal fillers add new volume to the skin. Their results typically last for anywhere from six months to two years depending on the chosen filler.

The injection process involves the following steps:

  1. A topical anesthetic is used to anesthetize the backs of the hands. It takes 20 minutes for the medicines to take effect. In some cases, fillers include lidocaine, a local anesthetic.
  2. The hands are cleansed using isopropyl alcohol.
  3. The filler is injected perpendicular to the dorsal superficial and intermediate layer, avoiding the dorsal veins, dorsal deep layer, and extensor tendons.
  4. The area is massaged using an ultrasound gel. At this stage, the hand is also evaluated to ensure that overfilling did not occur.

Fat Transfer

Fat grafting is a more permanent solution to regaining the youthfulness of the hands. It involves removing excess fat from another area of the patient’s body, purifying the harvested fat, and carefully injecting it into the backs of the hands.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is effective for hands that have been damaged by sun exposure. Along with alleviating roughness, it can also treat wrinkles and brown spots. Lasers remove the damaged outer layer of the skin. They also stimulate collagen production within the deep layers to make the skin look more youthful.

Creams

Many topical prescription creams are available to rejuvenate the backs of the hands. Speak with Dr. Papillion to find out which cream is recommended for you.
